Holiday Gift Guide: California Wine Club

What goes best with the holidays? Wine of course! Wine is great with meals, parties, as gifts and even when you are gift wrapping. Yes, I've been known to sit down with festive wrapping paper, tape, scissors, toys and a glass of wine. Let me tell you- the wine makes it a lot more entertaining! :)

That's why the next installment of my holiday gift guide is all about wine! This time it's wine as a gift! It can be a gift to a friend, family member or even to yourself (only if you've been good this year). I'm sure plenty of you have heard of the monthly "clubs" that are out there where you subscribe to a company and get a monthly delivery of that product/item each month. The particular club I'm going to share with you is the California Wine Club! First here's a little bit about the Club:

The club started in 1990 by the couple Bruce and Pam Boring. Essentially, both being wine lovers, found it time consuming looking for that perfect bottle of wine. Typically they would take suggestions from friends and family to try out a new bottle. So they decided to start their own club with the idea of "one friend recommending a great bottle of wine to another friend". Brilliant! They started visiting local vineyards and wineries in California and hence created the California Wine Club.

There are four different clubs that fit all different tastes, needs and budgets that you can choose to join! And the best part- membership is FREE! The four club choices are: Premier club, signature series, international selections, and aged Cabernet series. To learn more about each club visit

My Take: Lucky me I received a great little package in the mail from California Wine Company with two bottles of wine, one red and one white. Both were from the Robledo Family Winery.

The first was a red called Tempranillo. I'm a fan of red and I loved this one. I'm one of those girls who loves to have a red wine with some red meat or something sweet. I know I should pair it with chocolate but most of the time I don't care as long as it's a sweet. When I tried this wine it was more of an unwinding time at the end of the night. I loved it. It was really smooth, had a great taste and really calmed me down.

The second wine was a Sauvignon Blanc. I also love white wines but usually sweeter white wines. This white was definitely a hit though. It had more of a "kick" to it and I noticed these peppery hints throughout. It was great with the chocolate but I also had it with my pasta dinner last night! And the best part: This was a Bronze Medal winning wine from the 2011 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition!

Now on to the good part. If you're thinking about joining the California Wine Club or even gifting it to a friend this holiday season then learn more about them on their Twitter and Facebook pages. Also, stay tuned because sometime soon- like in the next week I'll be reviewing two more wines and hosting a giveaway for a $50 credit to the California Wine Company!!
