Get in Shape Girl Part III: Lessons

It's only a week and a half until the big Run Like A Mother race. How am I feeling? Well I have mixed feelings. I honestly don't feel like I'm ready for the race. Sure I'm going to finish the race but not with the time I wanted and I'm not even sure if I will be able to run the entire time. On the other hand, I'm physically feeling great. I have more energy, I'm breathing better and I've even lost 1.8 pounds in the past 2-3 weeks. I'm not one who is really great at keeping up with my weight. I normally just maintain my weight but now I'm trying to get back down to a more ideal weight for myself. I guess the most important thing about this whole experience is what I'm learning.
#1- I don't like to run but I like the way it makes me feel. Now I have a feeling this will change. I'm really hard on myself and if I don't see the results that I want to see when I see them then I get down on myself. Hey, I've only been training for 4 weeks and I can run 2 miles! It's a very slow 2 miles but it's better than what I could have done a month ago.
#2- Having the proper training attire/equipment is very important! Let me say that again, Having the proper training attire/equipment is very important. When I started running I had one pair of pants, 1 sports bra and only cotton tank tops! Oh and don't mention my shoes! We'll get to that in a minute. I learned that you need moisture wicking clothing and proper sports bras and tops and LOTS OF THEM! I'm a big fan of Old Navy's workout line, especially the compression pants! It's great for mommies that want to keep some of those jiggles in place...hehehe
#3- SHOES! O-M-G! I was running with shoes that were about 2 years old. I kept getting shin splints, blisters and the next day I could barely walk. Finally, with the help of my wonderful brother, also a runner (who gave me a gift card and coupon to Dicks) and my wonderful husband (who went with me to get shoes) I finally, FINALLY got a proper pair of shoes! Now I feel like I'm running on air! You won't believe the difference!
#4- Dream big but celebrate the small goals! My overall dream is to run a half marathon this November. Now that is a realistic dream. I have 6 months to train. Now when I signed up for this race I had 5 weeks to train and I haven't ran in over 5 years. And within those 5 years I've had two kids! Back in the day I could train in 5 weeks now I'm learning that it's going to take me longer to train. Each week I've been trying to add on .5 of a mile. By Saturday I'm going to try 2.5 miles. Will it be a good time, I doubt it will be what I want. Will I be able to finish? Yes! And that's my overall goal, to actually finish the 5k on Mother's Day within the allotted hour. It's reasonable and if I do better then so be it!
