Get in Shape Girl Part II

OK so here's an update. I'm sure everyone who reads my blog knows that I'm going to attempt (yes I say attempt) to run a 5k on Mother's Day. It's the Run Like A Mother (RLAM) 5k that will be happening in Raleigh, NC and various other cities across the nation. You can find more information about it HERE.

Well as of today I'm on week 3 of training. I only have 3 more weeks (including this week) to train. Things were going awesome. I'm on week 3 of the C 2 5K program. I've been adding a mile to that training for the past few runs and then on off days I've been walking with some ladies in the neighborhood. How have I been feeling? Not prepared! :( Yeah I know it sounds sad but I just don't feel like I have enough time to get ready. Part of running for me, is psyching myself up. I have to tell myself that "I CAN DO IT". At heart I'm a pessimist and I must admit it's been hard to change that. I've been relying on my friends and family for support. Everyone keeps telling me that it doesn't matter if I run the entire time, it just matters that I finish and that I stick with my new hobby. There will always be more races and I can always work on improving my time. Afterall I signed up pretty late in the game for this race so just completing it should be a feat!

So here's my plan (thanks to my brother for helping me set these goals): I need to be able to run 1.5 miles by this Thursday, 2 miles by Monday, May 1, 2.5 miles by Friday, May 4 and then 3/3.2 by Monday, May 7. Then I must end with a 3.2 mile run on Wednesday or Thursday May 9 or 10 and then take it easy for the other days.

BUT here's the dilemma. My husband is really busy right now, I have two kids and it's been super cold outside. Well, problem number one only lasts for a little while longer so scratch it off, problem number 2 is a little bit harder but the kids are in school three times a week so that helps, and number three was fixed with the treadmill....UNTIL...the treadmill stopped on me! I used it all weekend and now I can't get it to even start without tripping the breakers! So what do I do. Today's goal was to do the c 2 5k Program and then run a mile. Tomorrow I have to run 1.5 miles. But how do I do that when the kids aren't in school and I don't have a treadmill!!! I'm starting to get depressed.

I'm trying to step back, take a breath and hope for the best. I have been running for 4 days straight so a day off is okay. However, that leaves me less than 24 hours to figure something out for tomorrow! What do I do? This is driving me crazy! What do you do when your running plans don't pan out? Do you think I'm going to be ready for this race? I could use all the help and encouragement I can get!

  1. Hi.

I am Raleigh Race Director for Run Like a Mother. Congrats on committing to the race! You should not be stressing so much about the race. Your adrenaline will pull you through the race along with the energy of the crowd.

Number 1, who says you have to run the entire race? There is nothing wrong with doing intervals. The Run Like a Mother website has 4 different free training levels you can use to train. The program uses interval training, a method of walking and running that will help your body acclimate to the physical stress.

Number 2 you should not be running 4 days straight. That does not allow your body to recover and you run the risk of injury.

Number 3, all else fails when kids are around, husband travels and/or treadmill takes a vacation, put a video or tv on for the kids and jog in place or around the living room or up and down stairs and around the house. Sure it is not the same as road running or on a treadmill but at least you have your heart rate up! You can basically convert 10 minutes of cardio into a mile of running. So if you have to run 2 miles that day, jog 20 minutes in front of the tv or around the living room or use a different cardio machine. Where there's a will, there's a way..

  2. Hugs and congratulations! Can you find a friend who will do a babysitting trade with you? Even if you can't reciprocate until after Mother's Day, I'm hopeful you might be able to find someone who can help watch the kids while you get your run in!

  3. Go, Emmi, Go! I know you can do it! Maybe finding a babysitter would be a good idea? Just while you do a short run?
