Review & Giveaway: Team Umizoomi Preschool Math Kits

I know I keep talking about how my daughter is starting part-time preschool and how I'm becoming a little obsessive about it. Well I just can't help it! I just really want her to be ready. She already has a small speech issue that we are working on and I don't want her to have any other deficits entering school. I guess it's the school counselor coming out in me- trying to level the playing field as much as I can!

That's why kits/programs like the new Umizoomi Preschool Math Kits are wonderful for parents like me! I'm always trying to find age appropriate AND affordable curriculum or skill activities for my kids. Most of the time I just find free websites and then print up what they have. However when I saw the Umizoomi kit I just knew I had to jump on it! My kids love this cartoon! In case you don't know about it:  It has the cutest songs and the best activities. They are ones the kids can actually answer. Yes, there are a few cartoons out there that ask questions and my kids are just lost! This is one they love to participate in!

Let me tell you more about the kit! Nickelodeon worked with a team of educational consultants to develop the Team Umizoomi Preschool Math Kits, which address the areas of math that help lay the groundwork for getting preschoolers prepared for kindergarten. The goal of the kits is to provide hands-on, interactive ways for preschoolers to experience math with their parents, help kids incorporate math into everyday life and stress the importance of math as a key component of school readiness.

The Math Kit Includes:

  • 48-page workbook that amplifies the curriculum covered in each episode, setting up problems and providing opportunities for practice and repetition
  • 24-page storybook that invites kids to join Team Umizoomi on a math adventure
  • 24 Mighty Math Mission Cards - portable cards that provide math-based challenges for kids
  • 48-page activity book that reinforces math skills through simple games and activities
  • Team Umizoomi episode on DVD
My Take: I was so thrilled when I opened the Umizoomi Math kit! I never expected it to be so big and comprehensive. We started by watching the playground heroes episode. The kids started dancing around as soon as I put it in. It just so happened that it was raining that day just like in the cartoon and team umizoomi was cleaning up the playroom. We were sitting in the playroom so my kids started to clean up too! Thanks, Team Umizoomi! =) After watching the video I read the kids the Playground Heroes storybook. It was just look like the episode we watched so it just helped to reinforce what the kids had just learned! Perfect! Then we decided to try out the Sorting, Classification & Reasoning at the Playground activity book. My daughter wanted to use the pencils and eraser that came along but I couldn't find the pencil sharpener so we went with mechanical pencils instead.

I was amazed. My daughter was able to complete most of the tasks in the book with a little help from me. She showed me skills that I didn't even know she had. She was matching, naming shapes and counting. I was so proud of her! Even my son was able to do the matching! This is honestly the first book that I've used with them that they were able to complete the activities with very little help from me! I was so excited.

We haven't really used the Mighty Math Activity book much yet. There is more drawing of shapes and other drawing activities that my kids aren't quite ready for yet. As for the Activity Cards, the kids just like to look at the pictures. I've skimmed through a few and I can see us using them more in the future. For example, there was a cute one about sorting laundry!

Buy it: The kits can be purchased from Toys 'r' Us right now. They can also be purchased online starting soon! Just head on over HERE and put in your email address to get an email letting you know when they are available! They were released in stores on July 1 so you should be seeing them soon!
