Review: The North Star and The Scrambled States of America

If you read my blog then you know my kids love DVDs. They have both started part time preschool so I think it's a perfect time to introduce them to educational DVDs. The more exposure they get the quicker they will learn. My latest find is the Scholastic Storybook Treasures series. They have tons of great DVDs that share some classic stories along with a magnificent read along feature where your kids can see the books being read onscreen.

The two latest editions to this series came out nationwide yesterday, May 24. They are: The North Star and The Scrambled States of America. Read on to learn more.
The North Star

The title tale in THE NORTH STAR…AND MORE STORIES ABOUT FOLLOWING YOUR DREAMS, is a time-tested classic that’s sure to make viewers consider the road less traveled.  Celebrity narrators such as Zooey Deschanel and Tim Curry lend their voices to the other three stirring tales featured on this all-new DVD, including as William Steig’s “Brave Irene”, “Players in Pigtails” and “Swamp Angel”, a Caldecott Honor book from Anne Isaccs and illustrator Paul O. Zelinsky.  Extras include read along captioning.

The Scrambled States of America

THE SCRAMBLED STATES OF AMERICA…AND MORE STORIES BY LAURIE KELLER features more than an hour of carefully animated stories by the wildly talented Keller including “The Scrambled States of America Talent Show”, “Do Unto Otters” and “Open Wide: Tooth School Inside”. The original stories featured on the DVD have won numerous awards, including the Caldecott Honor, ALA Notable, Nick Jr. Best Book, and more, and bonus extras include read along captioning, discussion questions, an interview with Keller and the music video “Tooth School Anthem”.

My Take: Ok first I must say that both of these DVDs are great! At first my kids didn't like how they weren't "live" action enough for them. I also thought the states DVD would be a little too advanced for them but I believe they liked it better. I think it was just a little more entertaing for them. However, both DVDs are great and we plan on taking them with us on our next road trip. Your kids will be entertained and learning new things all at the same time!
