I'm always trying out new foods and products so of course I was excited to try out Truvia. I stopped using sugar to sweeten my foods a few years back and I have been a big time fan of Splenda. Now there are so many new natural sweeteners I've been excited to try them all!

Truvia (pronounced Tru-VEE-uh) is a natural, zero-calorie sweetener made with rebiana, the best-tasting part of the stevia plant. Stevia is a plant native to portions of northeastern Paraguay. It has been used to sweeten foods and beverages for more than 200 years.  Truvia offers consumers a new, natural way to reduce the number of calories in their diet. No calories...just the way I like it!  It is 200 times sweeter than sugar; one packet of Truvia provides the same sweetness as two teaspoons of sugar.  Not only can Truvia be used to sweeten tea, coffee, cereal, fruit, etc., but you can also cook with it!

My Take: Since it's summer time and there are all kinds of awesome fruits in season I've been hitting our local stores to pick up fresh fruit. I like to cut up fruit, make fresh fruit salads and drizzle them with honey or sugar. Well it's been so hot I haven't really used honey (my pantry got too hot and it kind of solidified) so I decided to open a packet of Truvia and use it on my cut strawberries. Truvia sent me a box of their sugar packets, the perfect size for single servings. I do know that with Splenda I have a tendency to use two of their packets for one serving but with Truvia one was plenty! And I love that Truvia™ natural sweetener is safe for people with diabetes, because it has no effect on the glycemic index (it does not raise or lower your blood sugar). Diabetes runs in my family so I try to do all I can to prevent it. And what a great way to still enjoy the taste of sugar without the worry!

I can honestly say that I am now a fan of Truvia. Will I be using it as sweetener for small servings? Yes, I plan on using it in my coffee, teas, or on my fruit. Will I be subsituting it for sugar in baking? I'm not sure. I did use Splenda when I was baking and didn't like how it tasted. Then Splenda created the Splenda for baking and it's just as good as sugar. So I guess it can't hurt to give Truvia a try. I'll be sure to let you know how it goes!

Buy it: Truvia can be purchased at many local grocery stores and food stores including Walmart, Whole Foods, and Target. It is available in boxes of 40-count ($3.99), 80-count ($6.49) and 140-count ($10.99) packets at the respective suggested retail price. As a matter of fact here is a great recipe that uses Truvia to try out with your friend's on a hot summer day. It's from one of my favorite chefs on Top Chef: Sam Talbot from Season 2!
